Somdev is the son of Ranjana and Pravanjan Dev Varman (an Income Tax official in India). His father is from Tripura and mother is from Meghalaya (states located in North East of India). They now reside at Guwahati, Assam. Somdev has an elder sister and an elder brother.
Somdev spent his formative years in Chennai, where his father was posted as an IT official for 10 years. Thereafter he went to US for college education and shot into prominance there by winning the NCAA titles 2 times. He turned pro in 2008 and has won few challengers / futures (singles and doubles) and has beaten several top 100 players.
Somdev's recent success include the final apperance in 2009 ATP Chennai Open where he lost to Marin Celic of Croatia 6-4, 7-6. On way to the final he beat former great Carlos Moya of Spain and 25th ranked Ivo Karlovic of Croatia. He is currently ranked 154.
